Fuming Zhang got his Ph. D. degree from University of Leeds in 1997. He joined the Linhardt Group at the University of Iowa in 1999, after worked in Hong Kong University of Science and Technology for one year as a research associate, and then he moved to RPI in 2003. His  research focus is in the area of molecular interactions, using surface plasmon resonance (SPR) spectroscopy, and in glycomics, and glycoengineering. He serves editorial board members for Journal of Biomedical Technology and Research (since 2013) and Journal of Biotechnology and Bioengineering (since 2014).



Glycobiology and Glycomics research is currently undergoing rapid development because of the advances in glycan structural analysis. It is important to understand the structure-activity relationships of glycan-protein interactions in the glycomics/glycoengeneering related research.  Glycosaminoglycans (GAG) are anionic, polydisperse, linear polysaccharides that are often highly sulfated. Many physiological and patho-physiological processes are modulated through GAG-protein interactions, including: blood coagulation, cell growth and differentiation, host defense, viral infection, lipid transport and metabolism, cell-to-cell and cell-to-matrix signaling, inflammation, Alzheimer’s disease and cancer. SPR is a powerful biosensor technique used to measure biomolecular interactions in real-time and a label-free environment. SPR spectroscopy has been successfully used for quantitative modeling of GAGs/heparin-protein, and biological evaluation of engineered glycotherapeutics (such as heparin and LMWH) in our lab. This presentation reports SPR studies on the interactions between GAGs/heparin and proteins and the application of SPR in glycobiology/glycomics study.
